“Mirage” for flute and piano was written in 1972 when the composer was a sophomore at East Carolina University. It was first performed by Nancy Neidlinger, flute, and the composer’s teacher, Gregory Kosteck, pianist. It received first prize in the North Carolina Music Teachers Association competition in 1971 and was first performed at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in the spring of 1972. It was subsequently performed at the Composers Conference in Johnson, Vermont, by Karl Krager, flute, and Robert Miller, piano.
